How to stop it all on the floor 😭

So my ds is 11mo and weaning has been really good. Started on purées and then finger food and he ate most of what he was given. However in past couple of weeks if I give him finger foods all he seems to do is chuck it on the floor. He did just have his first 2 bottom teeth come through but it started before this. Also started walking so is it just a development thing and I just keep trying in the hope he stops or is there something I haven't tried? He's my first so fumbling in the dark it feels like. Appreciate any help and advice anyone can give

Is he still taking purees? I imagine it is the teeth hurting as they come through making him not want to bite anything.

I'd just keep offering finger foods and purees and not stress if he only eats the purees at this point. He isn't one yet, so will still be getting a lot of nutrients from his milk

Yes he's taking purées but he seems to have drastically cut down how much milk he's having so that's making me worry he's not getting enough food/milk

Keep up the purées to make sure he’s actually eating enough food, and help him with the finger food

You probably can’t stop it, it’s just what they do sadly. Look up trajectory schema. My son kept throwing some food for flipping ages, till he was 2 I think, hopefully yours won’t go as long! You can try and encourage him to put food he doesn’t want in a ‘no thank you’ bowl on the tray, didn’t work for my child but has for others. Also if he’s eating a bit and then throwing, it’s probably because he’s done as you can end the meal and take the food away. Confusingly, they actually need less food ages 1-2 than they did 6mo-12mo, because the rate of growth slows so much, so don’t worry if he’s eating less now, that’s expected.

Get a waterproof mat for under the highchair to make clean up easier. We do baby led weaning, no purées at all, so food always goes everywhere a bit.

Will look that up definitely. He starts chucking it straight away so can't be that he's full as if I hand it bk to him sometimes he'll eat it. Have got a splash mat as I knew food would inevitably be thrown 😆 hopefully it's just teething problems and maybe too much anxiety on my part as he's my first 🤞

@Devilsmommy try not to be anxious, it’s really normal. Frustrating! But normal.

Keep going with purées. Only offer one or 2 harder bits. Put one of those big plastic sheets down on the floor. The very cheap decorating ones. And just say no, we don't throw. If he doesn't want to eat if that's ok, but throwing it on the floor is not ok.

Yeah I do do that and say no but he's only 11 months and doesn't understand.

I have a dog, that usually sorts the floor out.

In terms of minimising throwing, just give as minimal as possible. You can put a plate with the rest of his finger food in his eyesight, but only put a couple pieces on the highchair.

I also find putting food in “exciting” things like coloured tupperware helps.

Or could you give him a preloaded fork with the food on it?

God I hate weaning. The mess! Mine are 16 months and only just coming out of being covered in it. (Now they’re only 75% covered.)

Agree on the mat - eg

https://amzn.to/3qL45i7

you can use it when they start painting etc too.

Don't have a dog unfortunately, sounds bloody useful though😆 he not self feeding with spoon or fork yet. If I give him one he just sits there chewing on it, feels like he's been teething forever!! I've tried just giving him couple of pieces and he can see the rest in coloured bowl but it makes no difference 😞 I too hate weaning🤣

Ha. Well in which case you’re all set. Just pick it up and wait for the stage to pass. I guess don’t give too much at once would be my top tip.
