Weaning cup recommendations?

Hi!

LO is 7 months and we have tried a mam trainer cup with various teats, free flow sippy cup and a small open cup but she doesn’t seem to like any of them.

Any recommendations that worked for your LO? I was thinking about trying a straw cup but not sure which one to get!

Thanks

We used a tum tum tots weighted straw cup in the end - needed to teach him to suck through the straw with the yoghurt technique.

Mine is 10 months and has only managed to master the Tommee Tippee sippy cups. The simple cheapest one is easiest although not great for taking out as it can leak. I also
have a more complex one with a valve that doesn’t leak which we use when we go out but it’s harder to clean properly. I have tried about 5 other cups and these are the only ones she likes.

Mine (9months) loves his straw cups. Start with one that doesn't have a valve. 2 nice ones on Amazon are the "PandaEar Tiny Silicone Training Cup With Straw" and the "Munchkin C'est Silicone! Open Training Cup With Straw".

The Philips Avent Straw Cup is then great for out and about since it has a valve and doesn't leak. Just requires more suction to drink!

Open or straw cups are best for oral development. We got a 3 in 1 training cup from TumTum Tots. A weaning group I'm on Facebook had a discount code for 10% off too - Weaning the BLW Way. WTBLW10 was the code I believe.

Thank you all so much. I think we will try a free flow straw cup.

My next question.. how do I teach her to drink from a straw?!

I just kept offering my son the cup and showing him how I drank from it and eventually, he got it. I have seen people put a little yoghurt or purée on the drinking end though which may help!

You let them put the straw in their mouth, then gently squeeze the cup (you might have to block off the tiny air hole in the lid) so that water goes up the straw and into their mouth.

Then they learn that water can come out of the straw, and also the feeling of water in their mouth often prompts them to swallow and then also form a seal on the straw to be able to suck.

The Solid Starts website has an article/page on this very topic if you want to check it out.
