Advice needed on weaning ds

Ds is now 5 1/2mths and has shown a good interest in food from about 4 mths. At about 4 1/2 mths i started to wean him thinking it was the best thing for him. He took the food really well and enjoyed it but he started to drop his milk intake. went from 6-7 ozs per feed to just 3 ozs. Because of this I stopped with the weaning. His milk intake is now back up to 6 ozs per feed but i am concerned the same will happen again. He still shows really good signs that he is ready to wean but what if the same happens again? TIA

what signs of readiness is he showing?

Arbensmum · 16/02/2008 17:19

Waking more in the night, watching us eat, trying to take stuff from our plates

night waking and watching you eat are red herrings - dd watches me MN, and drive, and play the guitar...

If he's sitting well stick him in a highchair, put some finger food on the tray and let him get on with it.
If he picks it up and eats it he's ready, if not, keep offering till he does.
Couldn't be easier!

offer milky things to eat too, like yoghurts and milky cereals, milk intake doesnt just have to be through feeds, some babys drop milk feeds very early but as long as they are eating a balanced diet I didnt think it was too important. I had one ds that dropped milk feeds entirely b4 he was one and another that was still having 2 feeds a day at 3

Hi arbensmum

i've read that they need approx 24-28oz of milk a day at this age but some of this can be in the food eg mixed with cereal/rice.

Alex's milk intake has dropped a little but he's still getting the minimum so i'm not concerned. If he really enjoys food i wouldn't stop altogether as he needs to gradually increase food and decrease milk but maybe limit portions so he doesn't fill up on food?

agree with mrsbadger and grouphug

BLW might be the way to go

Hi Chatty, thanks. I was giving him the food after he had had his milk and i was mixing the stuff with his milk but i thought that 3ozs wasn't enough. I do give him little tatses, of yoghurt or potatoe etc if we are having it. I guess i will try and up it slowly and see how we get on
