Hit by a cold - solids refused/reduced. Is this normal, what should I do?

Hi all

I am sure that I am worrying unnecessarily and that this is perfectly normal but my LO who is 8 months tomorrow came down with a heavy cold on Sunday afternoon. Up until now weaning has generally gone well once she started eating!

She was fussy about breakfast on Sunday morning but took a reasonably good lunch, then the cold started and she barely took any dinner (couple of mouthfuls) and started to reduce her milk intake from mid afternoon.

Yesterday milk intake was reduced again but at breakfast I managed a few mouthfuls of Organix prepared pot banana porridge and at lunch we did manage to get mashed banana down her but she refused dinner (vegetables) totally.

This morning her bottle was taken at her usual levels but she refused breakfast (ready brek and grated apple).

Is this usual for a baby with a heavy cold? I was presuming that as she took her milk at usual volume she would want her solids this morning. Should I nampy pampy to her and find her foods she wants to eat as I am worried that would make her fussy going forward.

Any advice, comments and previous experience of colds and weaning gratefully received.

Thanks

Pip

Mine is 11 months now and I know he's under the weather if he's off his food. If it doesn't last more than a couple of days and she's still drinking milk, then I wouldn't worry too much. You could try upping her milk intake to compensate if she'll take it. Mine was hospitalised at 8 months and they told me that they wanted him to get up to half his normal milk intake before they'd let him go home but they weren't worried about solids at all.

You won't make her a fussy eater, honest

sounds normal. when theya reunder the weather, they dont want to eat much. and particularly difficult stuff life solids. just keep offereing milk, your lo will be back on solids once she is over the bug

Mine's 9 months and goes off her food (and milk) when she has a cold.. I know my appetite is always a bit off if I'm feeling crappy so I suppose its understandable. If she eats anything, it tends to be really smooth stuff like yoghurt, fruit puree or porridge

Just try and make sure she has lots of water (to make up for all that loss of liquid via the humungous amounts of snot they seem to produce ). I also find she tends to drink milk better from a cup when she has a blocked nose because she can take sips and doesn't struggle to breathe through her nose when the bottle is in her mouth

She is teething in addition to having a cold but has refused all fluids today apart from her formula milk. She finally took an extra 50ml of boiled water and threw it back up!

Normal - offer her nice things but don't worry if she doesn't eat much/anything. Fluids most important - sips. Ok as long as she's having wet nappies/urine doesn't darken - dehydration is the thing to guard against. She'll be eating like a horse once she's well again - and you won't make her fussy by spoiling her a bit when she's feeling ill.

We have a fairly dry dark nappy this morning but then she took 60ml of water and some solids this morning so hoping all ok. Getting docs to call just in case

Glad you're seeing gp so they can check she's doing well. Hope she's all better soon x

Oh, totally normal. When I have a cold I want soup, tea, hot ribena, boiled eggs and pretty much nothing else. Should think it's much the same for a little one - all about fluid and comfort.

LO is getting better, nappies wet now and taking sufficient milk. Some solids being taken...

Glad she's feeling better Pip... This baby lark's a bloody worry isn't it ?!

Pipsicle · 15/02/2008 09:19

Tell me about it! This morning shes back off her food but fine with milk and has a puffy cheek and eye - think related to teething...
