Don't worry , they all do that , he'll get there ! It just takes practice, no rush. dd had the Avent Magic Cup and we took valve out to start with. The Doidy cup is also good as it is an angled proper cup.

hey bumbly,

my 11 mo DD was just the same at your LO's age, and still sometimes ends up coughing and spluttering. When she's not chucking water at me that is .

i found dd was better with an open cup at that age, although she did soak herslef. a little cup, like the lid of a bottle or a tealight holder, see what you've got floating around the house and give it a shot. it's so cute seeing them put their two pudgy hands round a glass (with hardly any water in it) and pouring it all down their face.

We had the same problem with DS, he is 9 months now and I got so frustrated with the whole cup dilemma! Tried various different ones but went back to the basic tommee tippee cheap one (found one that onyl has one hole in the spout), I'd say its only in the last month that he has finally got the hang of drinking from it without gagging and spitting the water out everywhere so you just need to persevere! People kept saying that to me and I didn't believe he would ever be able to drink properly - but he can now, so it can be done! Patience!

I also found the Tommee Tippee one best. Took my 6 mo DD a few weeks to get the hang of it as the water does just pour out, but since she never got the hang of drinking from bottles, thought it was best to try something where the liquid came out easily. Now everyone is amazed at how enthusiastically she drinks water!
