Waiting until 6 months

My DS is 6 months old in a week or so, and I've not fed him anything other than milk until now, planning to do both purées and finger foods, as research seems to show benefits to both.

I know a few people with babies approaching the 4/5 month point and they are all going to start weaning now too. I know of one who was advised by their health visitor due to a hungry baby, but the others just think it's time.

Am I just over cautious? Did everyone else wait til six months? Did ANYONE^^ else wait til six months?? I'm panicking now that he will be 'behind' on his eating because I was too precious! PFB, in case that's not clear! Thanks

I found this too, everyone seemed to agree at first that the guidance is to wait until 6 months, then suddenly at 5 months most of the babies around me were starting to have some solids. Same with moving to their own rooms - some mums seemingly obsessed about SIDS risks at first, then suddenly moving them to their own room at 3 or 4 months.

I waited until 6 months for weaning, a bit longer for moving rooms - it's the official guidance for a reason. They've done the research so you don't have to! I'd say stick to your guns!

Unless there’s a genuine medical need and there’s guidance from a dietician, there’s no reason to wean before 6 months. We know the gut isn’t ready before then. I don’t understand why people are so keen to ignore this guidance and push on anyway

I waited till 6 months. I was EBF and the thought of all the mess and cleaning was enough to keep me waiting till 6 months 😂

Only mentioned EBF as I didn't have the bottles/sterilising to deal with

I waited until 6 months with my DD and did a mixture of purées and BLW. She's almost 17 months now and eats really well.
We felt a bit of pressure to try her with some food at 5.5 months but she wasn't fully ready and tbh I was happy to wait until 6 months.
Go with your gut and with the guidance

Everyone I know waited till 6mo. I started at 5 1/2 mo because I needed to work some kit days at 6mo and ds refused bottles. Managed to get him onto porridge by the time he needed to be left for a few 5/6hr days but we were definitely the odd ones out.

Nope we waited till 6 months and I think most of my friends did too. I looked up why and the research which made me more determined to stick it out (and to annoy my mother who was constantly on at me about weaning at 4 months). Most definitely they are not behind in any way and really enjoy their food now as toddlers / children.

I waited until 6months. Also weaning is a FAFF. So much mess, constant tidying up, we did purees as for a variety of reasons BLW wasn't for us, and i was always bloody steaming and blending. Honestly, enjoy the milk only time while it lasts! I was combi feeding but even the sterilising was easier than weaning.

My baby is 4.5 months and we will be waiting until she's 6 months. My baby seems so small still and definitely isn't anywhere near ready for solids in my opinion.

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 20/12/2022 20:41

I think we were a week or so early as wanted to let him have a little taste of something at Christmas dinner! So he held some carrots.

But generally I see no need to rush. Weaning is a pain in the arse, it’s messy and faffy and you have to start planning more and taking more stuff out with you. I was quite sad about it!

I have waited with all of mine bar one. I foster and used to have babies, I always waited until 6 months and most of them took to it like a duck to water. One baby started at five months under the guidance of SaLT.

Wow I don't think I've ever come to mumsnet and got the answer I was looking for Grin I really felt I was missing something!

Thank you all, one fewer thing for me to stress about
