Teaching to use a spoon

My DC is 13 months, eats well with a mixture of finger foods and me spoon feeding anything that can’t be picked up. They do ok when I hand a preloaded spoon but seem to have no concept of reloading it themselves. As soon as the spoon is out the mouth it get thrown onto the floor!
Should I be putting in the effort to get them spoon feeding themselves at this age? Or wait a few more months? I have no idea what is “typical” for this sort of thing

Just give them a spoon and fork every meal time and let them do whatever with it. If they drop the spoon/fork, then give it back. If it's deliberately thrown down then leave it there.

Your DC will learn through watching you using your cutlery and through trial and error, if you keep giving them an opportunity to use them and if you model it for them.

This is probably the way to go, I just know there will be food EVERYWHERE 😭😭😭😭
What age did your dc master spoon feeding?

Weaning's supposed to be messy. I honestly don't remember when mine got to be decent at eating with a spoon and fork, but it wasn't that long. They need to have the opportunity to practice, so give them cutlery every meal time.
