Tummy ache in early days of weaning

I started weaning with little mouthfuls of veg purees and oat porridge almost a month ago, and while baby has not had any symptoms of allergies or any constipation really (poos 1-2 times a day and doesn't seem to have trouble passing it), he's started having tummy aches at night now. He's been sleeping badly since the 4 month regression that started almost 3 months ago, but used to be easy to settle back to sleep. Now he'll wake up crying and nothing soothes him until he wriggles around and farts. Is this something all babies have to get through while they adjust to digesting other foods or should we take a break?

I haven't even introduced anything new this week, and he's been extra gassy. Two days ago we had a break and he slept a little better and no crying, then last night I gave him two small spoonfuls of oat porridge, which he has had several times before, and he was up for a cry and a fart at 2am ☹️

Poor little love? How old is he @GinnyBee?

GinnyBee · 10/11/2022 09:12

He's 6 months today actually @PritiPatelsMaker

Ok so if they're six months do they show the signs of readiness?

Just asking as not all do by 6 months Wink

GinnyBee · 10/11/2022 20:43

Oh yes, has done for a while which is why we've already started

In that case then I'd leave the oats for a few days in case they're the problem and just offer food in the morning so they've got plenty of chance to digest it before bed Wink

My DD had exactly this when I started her on baby porridge. She was in visible discomfort and up loads in the night (was going though before). I swapped to baby rice mixed with breast milk and stuck with just this for a week to let her body adjust. Have now started introducing veg. She is back to her normal self now and sleeping through again

Thanks, so pause on the oats for now then and maybe I’ll try rice. Or stick to veg and fruits for a bit.

Sounds like a good plan, let us know how you get on Wink

@GinnyBee how did you get on? I’ve just started weaning my baby (6m next week) and she’s showing signs of discomfort about an hour after eating. Only giving her baby rice or fruit/veg purees for now. She also has cmpa so staying clear of dairy obviously!

I can’t remember tbh, feels like a lifetime ago! He did definitely have some tummy issues at the start from bananas and then one FPIES like episode from oats but both cleared on their own eventually. Starting solids also brought his reflux back and once we got that sorted his sleep got better. He’s now 2 and a pretty good eater on the whole, doesn’t have allergies or other food related sensitivities!
