Weaning question - how much milk??

Hi there - I need some advice please...

My DD is 6 months old and I've just started weaning.

She gets a rusk with milk for breakfast then the rest of her bottle (7am) her bottle at 11am, 3pm - then pureed veg at 5pm - bottle at 7pm and 10pm.

Basically she's getting all her milk feeds plus breakfast and supper.

My question is - am I over feeding her with the milk?? Should I be dropping one/any of her milk feeds?

I should add that she is a big baby!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

be guided by your lo as she should start cutting down her milk by herself as her solids intake increases - you dont generally have to do it for her. There arent many calories in a bit of veg and a rusk so she will need to get the majority of calories from her milk. At that age ds had 5 milk feeds with 1 of them being in the night and he didnt give up his night feed till he was 8 months old i.e. went to 4 feeds at 8 months, 3 feeds at 9 months and was down to 2 feeds by 11 months. I didnt do it for him as he started to take less and less in the bottle so I stopped giving them and gave a snack and a drink of water instead.

The rule of thumb is a minimum of 20oz along with 3 meals up till the age of 1 year but having more than 20oz is fine too especially as you have just started weaning.

Were at basically the same stage, however my DD was weaned at 4.5 months instead of six because she was having a lot of milk and still being hungry. I dont think there is a right or wrong and it depends how much milk she is having at each feed it does seem like a lot of milk feeds but at the start its about getting your baby used to tastes and textures. Our day goes as follows Breakfast at between 7 or 8 baby cerial made with about 5 ounces of formula and she drinks whatevers left, 7oz bottle at 10.30ish after a nap, Pureed veg and yoghurt with water for lunch at 1, pureed food eg chicken casserole fruit if she is hungry and water. And 7or8oz at 7 before bed. Just go with your baby i found the Annabel Karmel book really good for telling you when to drop feeds, hope this helps

Hi there - excellent, thanks for the advice Seona and Mumbear - and I'll take a look for Annabel Karmel in Waterstones.
