Sippy cups

Hello, I'm very confused on the guidance about sippy cups.

My DD is 5 months and ive got her a sippy cup and I intend to give her cool boiled water in it but I don't know if I should wait until 6 months when she is weaning or not?

She is formula fed and ive seen I should be giving her water if it's hot and then the health visitor has said not to so I'm very confused.

Hello! I'm not an expert at all but I've been giving my same age baby water - I'd say it totally depends on how your baby is with feeding. I think the HV concern is around them filling up on water so not getting their nutrition from milk.

My most recent HV told me off for giving water, but my previous HV who had seen my baby more said it was fine as "there is absolutely nothing going to stop that baby from feeding" (she wasn't wrong either!)

Advice is to give water after six months.

If it is hot, like it is now, you can give them cool, boiled water before 6 months or you can add an extra ounce of water to their bottle to make it more watery. Have a read of the instructions on the carton. They used to have guidance in this but don't know if they still do.

Agree that usually babies under 6 months don't need water, just their milk but in hot weather is an exception.
