Advice for mum of cross, gagging 6 month old

Just wondering if anyone can help. I have been weaning my 6 month old (third child) for the past month with little success. He gags to the point of vomitting on any consistency of food, clams up when the spoon is near and becomes increasingly distressed during mealtimes. He is happy to suck bread but will not entertain any other sort of finger foods. About 30 - 45 mins after solids he then cries again. He is a happy lo and it is hard to see him this distressed for me and the rest of the family. My Things 1 & 2 weaned like it was their reason for living! He had some reflux as a baby but I don't know if this is a likely explanation for this.

why don't you give baby led weaning a go?

My HV suggested (before I started) combining the two approaches and giving both but I don't know if this just adds confusion to the problems. He won't try any finger food apart from crusts of bread!

i'd seriously ditch the spoons, then, if he hates them. why give him the aggro? let him eat bread, if that's what he wants, and plenty of milk, then let him loose on whatever you're eating. spag bol a favourite. he's only 6 months... that's nothing, there's no rush.

If you think the spoon might be part of the problem, give him one to chew on and suck for a few days so he gets used to the texture and feel of it in his mouth - it might not feel so strange when you then put food on it.

Thanks! The spoon thing was a hit. If I dip it in whatever we've been eating this weekend, he's just sucked it off. Aitch is the BLW blog yours? He tried rice cakes this weekend too and they went down nicely . Having already weaned two babies conventionally I can't quite trust the process of blw (sorry I'm a wuss. Can they work in tandem or should I commit?

yes, it's mine. and my advice is do whatever you want... technically, if you do a mix of finger food and mash etc that's really just the most up-to-date advice from the NHS if you're weaning at 6 months. if you're doing 'BLW' then the gist is that you really do leave them to it and if they're not eating you let them make it up with milk, so the idea is that they are in control of what they're eating etc etc. sometimes they take matters out of your hands anyway and stop liking the spoon...

Thanks aitch. I'm bottlefeeding tho does that make it harder or does it just work? Sorry to be picking your brains so much! The whole principle of blw makes perfect sense but i can't quite imagine it in practice!
