18 month old self feeding issue

I spoon feed most of the time which I'm sure is frowned upon. If I put a plate of chopped up cucumber for example in front of my 18 month old they will keep putting it in their mouth without having swallowed the previous ones and end up with a mouth full of cucumber and it's all finished within seconds. If I give a spear of cucumber, they try to shove the whole thing in their mouth which is far too much for them. Same with toast. I see other children of a similar age sit peacefully eating at a sensible pace. Where am I going wrong?

It's probably just a skill they need to learn. I'd start offering more finger foods type meals like blueberry pancakes for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch and just let them get on with it Smile
