My boy LOVES food and gobbles up everything always looking for more, but how much 'should' I be giving, are there any guides around? I'm worried he has too much.. his weights fine and is very active so maybe it balances out 🤷🏻‍♀️

If he’s starting to crawl and go through a growth spurt, it’s amazing how much they can eat at that age!!! My 9mo routinely ate more than my 3yo. Usually he just has 4-5 tbsp of a purée, but on growth spurt days he can literally eat a whole hard boiled egg, a whole avocado, and a chicken drumstick in one sitting… and then have a full feed of milk before bed!!! Our GP said this was “impressive but within normal range”.

We did Baby led weaning so we just kept giving more until baby indicated they'd had enough. Some days more than others! Now 18m old, sometimes LO eats more in a day than me 🤯

As much as they'll eat! They don't eat if they're not hungry when they're little. Im purposely over zealous with how much I put on daughters plate, that way, if she eats it all, great! If she leaves some, at least I know she's had as much as she wants.

Just give him as much as he wants.
My now 1 year old went through a very hungry phase around that time - combination of growth spurts and finally enjoying solids I think.
His appetite has now got slightly smaller - I think the novelty of eating has worn off a bit so he gets bored and stops.

I remember being on holiday camping in France with my first with friends and he ate a yoghurt, a peach and a third of a French stick for breakfast, the friend was 😮 multiply that by his size and what is he going to eat by the time he's a 6' teenager! Let him eat whatever amount he wants of natural wholesome food, he will self regulate 😊

That's so reassuring Thank you! It's amazing what they put away! What sorts of food did you give to fill them up? Bigger portions or more variety?

The Caroline walker trust has some great resources to download, showing photos of appropriate portion sizes for different age groups.

My 8mo easily eats as much as me some days. 2 weetabix for breakfast, jacket potato for lunch followed by a yogurt, 2(!) bowls of tuna pasta followed by a pear for tea.

Chanel05 · 06/04/2022 07:14

At this age they're very good at self-regulating. If he's hungry - feed!

My dd eats hardly anything (at 18 months!) and is still on the 75th centile.

BertieBotts · 06/04/2022 07:17

They vary so much at that age. DS2 would eat three whole Weetabix for breakfast and a banana on top but DS1 would barely lick a piece of pasta or have about three raisins. They are both pretty normal eaters now.
