i got a couple of months worth of family boxes from there, it tasted very nice but wasn't worth the money IMO.... i much prefer getting twice the amount for my money from my local butcher....may not be organic all the time but sure is nice to save a few pennies....

their goods were not worth the price and their service was awful. i know order from organic delivery and they are 100% better

OldieMum · 03/01/2008 19:29

We ordered from Abel and Cole for about two years. They offer a wide choice of produce, but I became fed up of receiving rotten produce (far from every week, but often enough to be annoying). We switched to their main rival, Riverford, almost two years ago and have found their produce much better quality. They have never sent us sub-standard produce. I don't see a significant difference in the price of their stuff and organic veg sold by supermarkets. They also sell delicious cream, yogurt etc and have recently started selling high quality meat. That is certainly more expensive than at most butchers, but organic meat is almost inevitably more expensive than intensively-reared meat, because the production methods involve higher costs.

I have a weekly order but not a veg box from them.

I ditched their veg box because it was very expensive compared to local greengrocer, especially if you're not disciplined about using ingredients you haven't picked yourself. Have had no problems with quality, though. I'll still get spinach and kale as one-offs because it's the best I've had.

I have a weekly delivery for milk, cream/creme fraiche, breakfast cereal, tinned toms, chick peas, etc. Their range has just expanded again so it's now pretty extensive. Great looking pies!

It's easy to change your order every week. The chilled stuff comes in a cool box which you return the following week.

i have thrown out more htan i have eaten due to food being rotten.. i keep meaning to cancel it !! although the apples are lovely and the carrots too, but i could just get that from the new local farm shop that has jsut opened

and they never take my old boxes, even though i leave them in the porch

wibbleweed · 04/01/2008 20:02

I'd recommend Riverford, if they deliver to your area. A friend tested Able & Cole and Riverford and found the latter to be far superior in quality. And you're not hemmed into a regular delivery. Some weeks I get something, some weeks I don't, and if my 'regular' box is crammed full of 101 different types of cabbage (mind you, it is winter!), then I can always choose a different box, or nothing at all. I only use them for fruit and veg though.

Thumbs up for Riverford as well. Used A& C as well but too expensive and poor quality. Riverford is great plus good outside the box items as well. Yoghurt and marmelade is lovely!

halogen · 13/01/2008 19:54

I really like A&C but maybe it varies from area to area? I've also found their customer service excellent and I think being able to say you don't want something for one week only v helpful in dealing with the beetroot mountain.

dueinnovember · 13/01/2008 20:24

I've just cancelled my A&C order after trying them for the last 4 weeks. The concept is great but we've had issues with the quality (we live in the Bristol area) and don't get enough in the mixed fruit and veg box so always have to buy extra at the supermarket. It's also expensive for the amount you get. Give it a go though and see what you think, the convenience factor is great.

beckmo · 15/01/2008 15:16

Another one for Riverford here. Cancelled my Able and Cole box as regularly sent substandard veg. When they sent me 3 florets of cauliflower instead of a whole one that was the last straw!Riveford is great...beautiful veggies and much more for your money.

bundle · 15/01/2008 15:20

i get riverford too. only had 1 problem, with a dodgy pineapple..

PuppyDogTails · 15/01/2008 18:20

Another tick for Riverford
