On/off constipation since starting solids

We started weaning our LO around a month and a half ago, she’s now over 7 months but in the last 3-4 weeks I’ve noticed she is getting more constipated where she tries really hard to go and only has small/hard poos…then if I try and help her with the aid of prunes/pears she ends up with an explosive poo either later that day or the day after.
Is this normal or anything to worry about? It’s something I’m considering talking to the HV about but since covid I don’t think I even know the name of my health visitor I’ve seen and heard so little from them.

Did any of your babies struggle with something similar? Prunes and pears do work but I just worry it can’t be good for her little stomach Sad

She is on 3 meals a day and hasn’t dropped bottles yet although her milk intake has gone down. I just go off her lead with what she wants/ doesn’t want.
She has porridge for breakfast, lunch something like egg/avacado/banana pancakes etc and then dinner is very varied with lots of protein (fish mostly) and made up of 2/3rd’s veg.

Try giving her some water, it could be a little dehydration.

Is she drinking enough non-milk fluids? It sounds like she might need more water.

If it doesn’t right itself in a week or so on increased fluids, go to the GP. Untreated constipation can cause all sorts of problems down the road, as I sadly know.

Shes actually great with water, it’s her favourite part of the meal. I offer her sips throughout and a big drink at the end although obviously her intake isn’t anywhere near the same level as her milk.

Should she be drinking a certain amount a meal?

That’s great news she likes water! That’s half the battle. Does she drink water between meals? Ideally you’d have a cup sort of on the go all day - it’s not just at meals, she needs to be hydrated throughout the day.

I’m not sure how much fluid they’re supposed to get at that age but if you Google, the NHS website should tell you.

Please speak to your health visitor and doctor.
My DS was constipated as a baby, years of being fobbed off has meant he’s had surgery, been admitted to hospital and is now needing a stoma for it. Worst thing to do is to get into the routine of constipation/laxatives/diarrhoea
