For the last 6 mornings he has woken @ 5am HUNGRY. He is big (20lb's atm). He has about 40-45 oz per day over 5 feeds. He has SMA hungry milk, although we have only been unsing this exclusively for 2 days (before just last feed). He is a dream baby and has been sleeping through for ages (12/13 hours). It is definitely hunger.

What shall I do? Shall I introduce a dream feed? He was only 5m yesterday. Shall I introduce food already? HELP!

The hungry baby milk could be making things worse. I also have a big 5mo and she had also started waking at 5am so I tried hungry baby milk but the only difference it seemed to make was to give her indigestion.

Personally, I would try a dream feed before solids because I think it's a better way of getting calories into them (milk has a higher calorific value than any of the early weaning foods and your DS is likely only to take very small quantities of solids at firt anyway).

For what it's worth, DD is back on the normal stage 1 formula, occasionally chewing on a piece of apple or cucumber, and has decided as of two nights ago that 6am is a more appropriate time to wake up. I have NO idea what changed but you may find he sorts himself out in a couple of weeks anyway.

give more milk, whether that be a 'dream feed' or milk at 5am.

I would increase the frequency of feeds before thinking about solids at all. Solids have less calories than milk & won't actually make him less hungry. I eat/drink more than 5 times a day so I would expect a small baby to feed more often tbh. Maybe try offering milk every 2-3 hours & see how that goes?

Thanks so much for all responses. So many of my friends seem to have started feeding (solids) early (4/5 months) it is good to get other advice. I will do the dream feed tonight, but will stick to the hungry milk. He seems OK on it. Thanks again.

Well, he's still waking up and its getting earlier. I tried the dream feed and it made no difference.

Does anyone know if introducing a dream feed at this stage will take a few days to kick in?
