Weaning my 5month old

Hi I'm new here so be kind lol
I started weaning my 5month old on Monday with just a spoon of something in the morning. He has loved the tastes (rice, porridge and carrot) however it seems to have completely knocked him of his feed schedule.
So wake and bottle at 7am, feed at 10am, weaner 1115-1130 but then cries after and won't settle till he has milk about 3oz. Then when he cries for next feed around 2 he's only taken 3oz again.
I'm worried he won't get enough formula.
Does anyone have a better schedule for me to try or does this sound about right.

How about trying him with a spoon of something at 8 am? So it's not replacing a bootle? If that doesn't work and you're still worried he's not taking enough formula, you could always leave it a couple of weeks and try again?

Polyphonicemma · 03/07/2021 12:30

I will bear that in mind however I'm not replacing a bottle he feeds at 7 then 10 and I've fed him porridge at 11 then he cried for milk after and took another 4oz. However it seems to knock him off the rest of the day's feeds till bedtime.
Maybe if I try the solids earlier the rest of the day will settle.
When should I introduce afternoon food as the Internet contradicts itself so many times.

The current NHS Guidelines are to start solids at 26 weeks or when they are showing the signs of readiness.

They then mention moving onto solids 3 times a day between 8 and 9 months, so there's absolutely no rush to introduce anything else just yet Smile

IncyWincy21 · 03/07/2021 17:50

When I started I used to give it about 8/9am
He only needs a couple of mouthfuls.

Polyphonicemma · 03/07/2021 17:55

So after 4oz at 12 he had 2oz at 4pm then 5oz at 6pm. He will have a bedtime feed then settle for the night so today totals about 28oz.
I think it's just messing with my head as pre spoonful he would take between 6-8oz 3hrly and he is a big boy.
I may try the weaner at breakfast time tomo and see how that works with the rest of the day.
Thanks for all your help 😁

Is there an actual reason you're giving purses? If it's messing his routine he could well end up with fewer calories.

I had a similar chunk (91st centile until after 1st birthday). 5 to 6 months marked the peak of her milk intake at 40-48oz per day (8 bottles per day - 2 hourly between 7am-9pm, bottles of 6oz which she drank at least 5oz). So I can't imagine her being anywhere close to happy in 28oz.

If you're doing solids to increase calories, is stick to milk. Just do more bottles per day.

If your aim is to introduce tastes then it's not at all about calories. Just give baby a strawberry when you're having dinner. It a steamed carrot batton. Or a quarter square of toast while you're having breakfast. It's about experience and experimentation and makes no difference if it's eaten or squashed and played with. And carry on with increasing milk intake through the day.

Puree's (I've only had one G&T, promise!)

tommmanndjjerrry · 03/07/2021 18:22

One spoonful of purée is not messing with his milk schedule.

FATEdestiny · 03/07/2021 18:47

If course you haveFATE

It may have been quite large Confused

Polyphonicemma · 03/07/2021 19:20

Lol enjoy your G&T 😋
Thanks for the help.
I'm not feeding him to replace calories just for him to explore tastes and textures that's why I can't understand how it's knocked his routine off so much.
Normally he would take 5-8 oz every 2-3hrs starting at 7am and ending with his bedtime feed between 730pm and 8pm.
He shows desperation for milk straight after his spoonful and takes about 4oz (11am-12) but then when wants feeding next after that one he only takes 2-3oz(about 4-5pm) Surely a spoonful and 4oz isn't going to keep him full till about 5pm?
Especially as he is used to having so much milk in a day.

I'm thinking 7am bottle in the morning then will give him a spoonful about 0930(as would fit in with school run) then bottle after then see how the rest of the day pans out. 🤷‍♀️👌😁

He wants milk after the spoonful so give the spoon right before a bottle is due. Preferably in the morning in case it gives him a sore tummy. Last thing you want to be dealing with at bedtime, but not the first bottle of the day as he'll be hungry and fractious. How about before the second?

rantymcrantface66 · 03/07/2021 19:30

Also though if he's having a full bottle every 2-3 hours he's probably ready to space that out a bit more anyway. The food might only be helping that normal progression to happen

Polyphonicemma · 04/07/2021 22:45

Much better day took about 35oz in total..
Gave him a spoon of baby rice when he was ready for a feed at 0930 using milk from his bottle. He then polished off the rest of the 6oz and fed about 3-4hrly since that.
Thanks for all the help and advice really appreciate it 🥰
