Do you have to wean at six months?

My little girl has just turned six months old and is EBF. She was a month prem.

Her head control is good now but she can’t sit up unaided and the NHS website says they need to be able to stay in a sitting position and hold their head steady, which she can’t yet do.

Do you have to wean at six months? I’m not in a hurry and thinking of waiting until she can sit up unaided. Would there be any issues if I left it?

Any advice? Smile

You know her best. Just wait a couple of weeks and see what you think. Then a couple of weeks more if you want. There's no rush!

Not at all, it is just the earliest the recommend it (unless medical needs dictate starting earlier)

Is she 6 months from birth date or corrected?

No you don't have to. I wish I had waited a bit longer with my eldest as she just used to be sick every time she ate as she had such a strong gag reflex. Although that went on until she was about 12 months so I probably couldn't have waited that long to wean her!

Thanks Smile

@Terminallysleepdeprived Sorry, she’s 6 months from birth, so 5 months corrected.

Then its too early realistically so don't worry. Wait til she isn't months corrected and see how she is.

We tried with dd at 6 months, she wasn't interested at all, she wouldn't entertain food in her mouth so we left it. Think she was 7 months maybe a bit over when we started properly.
