If your 9-10m DC is FF and on 3 meals a day...

What time are the milk feeds and how much do they have, and what time are their solid meals?

DS is nearly 9mo and I'm starting to slowly wean him off BF, but as he still currently has a couple of feeds at night, I really don't know what to aim for with formula. I've been he should have 20oz spread through the day, but as DS is used to spreading his feed over 24 hours, don't know how much space to allow between milk and solid feeds as don't want to fill him up with too much milk so he doesn't take solids IYSWIM.

i don't think he takes a lot in the night, I think it's more the comfort thing, but want to reduce that gradually, knowing he's getting mostly what he needs during the daytime.

grateful to hear what you do, TIA.

My DD is almost 9 months and has

8.30-Breakfast followed by 220ml of milk

12.30ish-Lunch and another bottle of 220ml

5pm-Dinner

8ish-Bedtime bottle-220ml

Snacks sometimes in between at 11am.

She sleeps through majority of the time unless shes teething.

at that age ds had 3 milk feeds and they were given seperate from solid feeds e.g.

7am - milk
8am - breakfast
10am - snack (missed if he was sleeping)
12pm - lunch
3pm - milk
5pm - dinner
7.15pm - milk

the amounts of milk were around 7/8oz although he was starting to take less at the 3pm milk feed. He dropped to 2 milk feeds around 10 1/2 months.

just another perspective (and no, you aren't who I thought you were in RL!)

ds is nearly 10 months and has:
7am 8oz formula
8am breakfast - toast or cereal if we can get it down him
10 snack (breadstick / fruit)
12 lunch (sandwich or mini quiches apparently, as he won't eat bugger all else)
2.30 8oz formula
5 tea meat + veg + potatoes sort of thing
7 8oz formula

hth

thanks seona & BH, both your timings quite similar there then. I just don't know how to start getting DS to take more in the day, he's quite happy at the moment to spread his intake over 24 hours .

I'm hoping if I sort the night wakings out, he'll reduce his night feeds and start eating more.

shame about that BH , could've done with somebody friendly around me at the moment, seems like I'm looking for answers on loads of threads on here at the moment!

I think you could either try to feed less at night- maybe limiting the time on the breast? - , or try to get him to take more milk in the daytime by more frequent, smaller feeds?

choolie - it was the ff that gave it away - the person I know still exclusively bf! I couldnt bring myself to straight out ask her though!!

choolie · 18/11/2007 22:58

BH if DS had his way I think he would still be excl BF too! I make up btl after btl of forumla, most of which goes down the sink, despite my best efforts to get at least a couple of oz in him. He's much happier with BF at night - not even that fussed with solids half the time. For the amount of time I spend lovingly preparing food and milk for him he should be the size of a house (in fact, considering the amount of time he's on the boob at night he should be the size of a big house), but he hovers on the average line on his weight chart or just below it(50th I think it is???) and most of the food goes in the bin at the moment . I have felt the last couple of nights that he's taken less, so fingers crossed with the improved sleep I'm hoping for we might just get there.
