Baby suddenly getting really upset when I offer food!

Hi, wondering if anyone can please help. My son is 6 months and one week, started weaning two weeks ago with single veg. A combination of purées/mash and finger food along side it. First two days were really good and he actually got a fair bit down him. Picking up the broccoli and putting it in his mouth, grabbing spoon and putting it in his mouth. But things seem to have got progressively worse... he just seems to get upset really quickly. I put him in his chair with finger food and I offer him the spoon, he doesn’t put any of the finger food towards his mouth, just plays with it now and maybe grabs one or two spoons but then just gets really upset so I stop and take him out of the chair because I don’t want it to be a negative experience for him.

What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I can do? Should I pause on the weaning?

Oh and I give him his ‘meal’ at the same time each day roughly, after his morning nap.

I was thinking I would start giving him breakfast after two weeks (so around now) of some of my milk mix with porridge and different fruits so he could try different flavours but perhaps moving to two meals is not a good idea if he’s being like this currently?

Thanks in advance! Feeling anxious and I know I shouldn’t because it’s really early days !

My DS was a bit like this. Tbh I stopped for a couple weeks and tried again. He just wasn’t ready. Speak to your health visitor though if your worried but don’t get too upset. Your not doing anything wrong.

At this age food is just fun so it doesn’t matter if he is getting much down him. As long as he is having his milk then food is for learning.

Good luck xx

Continue with the finger foods and let him just play with them for now. Don’t worry about him not putting anything in his mouth; just playing with them will still expose him to their smell and texture at the same time as developing his fine motor skills.
