Refusing bottle

Poppet12345 · 19/02/2021 14:06

My little one is 5.5 months.
In the last couple of weeks she's been refusing her bottle, getting half way through it and smacking the bottle away or wriggling. She's doesn't seem to be in pain but just that she doesn't want it.
She's went from drinking a 9oz bottle to now drinking about 5oz.
If I keep persisting she will get another oz in her but she won't finish the bottle.
I thought it might be teething as she's drooling a lot and her hands are constantly in her mouth.
Has anyone experienced this?

How many feeds a day is she taking?

Have you started weaning?

merryhollybright · 19/02/2021 15:00

Will she drink it if you give her something to hold? My DD will only take hers if she's holding the lid Grin
Otherwise if she doesn't want it, she doesn't want it. Babies know when they're full, sometimes they go through phases where they drink loads and sometimes they barely want any. Try to relax with it, you can't force her to take it.

I was going to ask the same thing as this will affect how much milk is needed

Poppet12345 · 19/02/2021 15:17

Hi all just an update I've just spoke to the gp and yes I have slowly started weaning, gp said it's normal for her to be reducing her milk, like one of you said if she doesn't want it then she's full. Think I just need to relax a little lol thanks for your replies though

I've just commented on your other thread.

If you have started weaning, are you offering food just once a day Poppet?

I have had success with 360 cups, I introduced one to my last foster baby when he was about your little one's age and he really took to it.

dementedpixie · 19/02/2021 17:15

3 is not a lot of feeds for a baby of that age. How often are you offering milk? Up until about 8 months my dc had the following timings:

7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm plus 1 at night - milk feeds
8am, 12pm, 5pm - food

Could you offer additional smaller feeds during the day?

Tried to offer more at different times but she's not interested. She's always done big amounts and went for longer

You’ve posted this in 3 different places and I answered in one of those, but will post it here since this one has the most responses..

Have you tried a faster teat? My DD would smack the bottle, wriggle and refuse when the flow wasn’t fast enough.

Honestly, I'd not give her the porridge tomorrow and see how she gets on.

Just because you've started weaning doesn't mean that you can't have a day or two off and it might just give her an appetite for her milk again 🙂

Poppet12345 · 20/02/2021 19:28

Hi all I just wanted to post an update incase anyone else experiences this. Changed the teat size still no difference, she had tommee tippee anti colic bottles as she had colic when she was smaller and I just never thought anything that she was still having them.changed her bottle to a normal tommee tippee bottle today and she was back to her normal self. I should have realised sooner to change the bottle over and thought the teat would have sorted it but nope she clearly didn't like the anti colic bottles anymore. I can now stop worrying
