Have been giving hummus to DS since 6mo, no problem. YBH at 7mo unless he has allergies in the family, I think you should be fine giving him anything you eat apart from the obvious no-nos (salt, sugar, honey, nuts etc).

Chickpeas are great for protein and iron - my DS has had them since 6 months - hummous is really easy to make - chickpeas, tahini, little bit of garlic, lemon juice and greek yoghurt. Spread it on toast as finger food.

DS is vegetarian and we've given him similar to what we have (without salt, too much spice, etc). He really likes lentil lasagne, mild chilli with red kidney beans, beany bake (various beans or chick peas with some veg, tin of tomatoes - simmer until everything soft and bake in over with mashed potato and cheese on top). He tried some of my DP's imfamous Thai green chick pea curry the other day and loved it but sadly was sick later on. Not sure it was connected but we haven't tried it again!

I've got a recipe book by Carol Timperley - veggie recipes for babies, its quite good for ideas.

Thanks everyone. Anyone else have any recipes???

There a great recipe for chickpeas on the Mumsnet Little Italy 2 thread - Pippi's mum's recipe for pasta e ceci. Yummy. About 3 weeks ago.

StrawberryMartini · 20/10/2007 20:06

I would possibly avoid them if there's a history of allergies in the family. DS had an anaphalactic shock to chickpeas when he was 7 months but everyone I've spoken to since says they've never heard of such a reaction! It was a shame as it was a Moroccan chicken recipe and one of the few things he liked!

Here's a great recipe that is always a hit with the babies:

Sweet potato with chickpeas and courgette. Basically do about half sweet potato, a quarter chickpeas and a quarter courgette for agood consistancy. So for 200g do 100g sweet potato, 50g chick peas and 50g courgette.

homemade hummus or falafel

hettie · 26/10/2007 18:57

so I'm sure i could google it but out of interst piffle how do you make home made baby friendly falafels?

it's not a vegetarian site but there are lots of veggie recipes here including some damn fine chickpea burgers.
