1 year old not eating solids

Hi everyone.

My DS is turning 1 in 3 weeks and he's always been a really good eater ever since he turned 6 months. I never gave him finger foods because he didnt know how to put them in his mouth so he was exclusively spoon fed. The past 2 months i've been trying to give him what we eat e.g rice and curry but he gags even though the curry is smooth and the rice is soft. He eats porridge and doesnt mind textures as much but when he gags he refuses to eat any more and he usually only has about 2 spoonfuls before gagging! He has now located his mouth (LOL!) and will eat snacks by himself. This morning i gave him some toast fingers with butter which he tried to eat (so proud!) however hes lost a lot of weight now. He is only 8.9KG. This worries me because i dont know whether to persevere with chunky foods or to just give up and continue with purees. My family and in laws are giving me grief telling me that he's gone so skinny and to just continue blending his food so he gets nutrients! But my concerns is that if i try to give him solids, he will know that i'll eventually give him purees so he'll just keep refusing solids! It doesnt bother me much because i know he'll start eating solids soon but it tires me because he doesnt know how to feed himself. He also doesnt hold his bottle when drinking milk so he's a bit of a princess who likes mummy doing everything for him. I've been trying to exclusively feed him solids (nothing pureed) for the past couple of days and hes just not having it.

Thoughts&tips?

Could you move towards giving predominantly finger foods? Dd1 was exclusively weaned on finger foods as she completely refused a spoon. Itvss messy and can make mealtimes somewhat slow, but she took in a surprising amount. Dd2 is more like your situation, but she does take textured food from a spoon which makes life easier. She refuses to feed herself though

Not sure an 11 month old not holding his own bottle makes him a princess, maybe a tad unreasonable!
I'm not sure a baby that age has enough reasoning to know that refusing solids = getting purées, just carry on offering a mix of purées and fingers food at every meal, he'll get better with solids as he gets older, try not to worry he's not enjoying them much right now, he's still only little.
