5 months is quite early to start weaning, so take your cues from your DD.
As long as she's happy and interested in eating, you can start introducing other foods immediately.
You can try her on some mashed banana, fruit purees, yoghurt, pureed vegetables etc.
If you want to take the BLW route, you can give her some small finger foods to hold, chew and suck herself. For that you can give her sticks of bread/toast, sticks of well-steamed vegetables (carrot, broccoli, sweet potato etc) and other soft items that she can hold.
Introduce new foods gradually. Give her time to get used to things and be prepared for her to refuse them the first few times she meets them.
Also, be prepared for her not to be in the mood to eat at all on some days.
After quite a short while you'll probably be surprised by the range of foods that she'll happily eat.

Good post Ruth - I think you've just about covered everything.

When my DS was weaning, I also started him on baby rice and then gradually went on to apple puree(on its own or mixed with baby rice), then pear, then slowly introduced puree'd vegetables. Plain at first, then started to mix together, i.e. carrot and potato, peas and sweet potato, etc.

Good luck!

There are lots of threads about baby led weaning and also lots of stuff of the net if you google it.
I guess most people would agree that Aitch is the local expert in that field. She has a blog about it, but I'm afraid I don't know the address.
Some people only give finger foods etc, but personally I do a mixture of those and spoon feeding.
Good luck with it. Weaning seems really daunting at the start as bottle feeding was so simple. However, take the lead from your DD and you'll soon work out what's best for both of you.
