When's it safe for baby food?

My DS is 4 months old now and I was curious as to when's the earliest we can start him on baby rice and it be safe.

With the current situation of the world our health visitor isn't coming out to see him until he's 9 months old.

Thank you mummies 😊😊

6 months, I would also suggest bypassing baby rice and go straight onto veg etc

TheGriffle · 03/09/2020 12:30

Around 6 months and only when showing signs of being ready and can sit up in a chair unaided without their head flopping.

And yes, baby rice is pointless. Blended vegetables or Finger foods like sticks of cooked carrot etc and slices of buttered toast are all fine from 6 months.

Buttered toast? ShockGrin
I was going to give ours mush at 6 months as she's had nothing but runny milk all summer.
Then move quickly onto sticks of vegetables but didn't think toast would be on list.Smile Spiffin

6 months old and only when he can sit unaided without flopping over

Six months and when showing all other signs of readiness.

Baby rice has no nutritional value.

We're doing baby led weaning and it's going great. DS's first meal was a roast chicken dinner.

NHS advice is to start weaning at 6 months but many people do still follow the outdated recommendation of 4 months. Personally I've just started weaning my baby at 5.5 months and she's taking to it really well so far. The other mums in our NCT group have started between 5-6 months. I've gone straight to pureed veg - don't see the point in baby rice - and will be starting baby-led weaning in a couple of weeks.

As pp around 6 months when able to sit unaided during the meal.
I tried the rice myself and it is rank. We went for blw and basically fed her what we were having (salt added at the table). Only restrictions were honey till 12 months and no whole nuts (chocking)
