Just wanted to check Houmous was okay for my 8 month old.
I brought some the other day and thought it would be a nice change for his tea tomorrow.

Yes!!! My lo would happily bath in the stuff. She's nine months and has been eating it since 6. She's now in the habit of licking it all off her bread and placing the gleaming bit of bread back on her highchair table...

Mine has been eating it since he was 6 months ...

Fed my DD some last Tuesday and she loved it. We only started weaning on Monday, but that was all that was in the fridge. Go for it...your DC will love it.

If there are allergies in the family I would be careful as it contains seseme seeds.

Many kinds of hummous have tahini in it, which is made from sesame seeds. I think most people try to stay away from that until at least over a year because it's on the likely allergen list.

Isnt't there quite a lot of salt in houmous? That would be my only concern...

Brangelina · 04/10/2007 16:01

My DD has eaten hoummous since she was 7 months. It's very healthy, loads of iron and calcium as well as the protein and healthy fats. I make my own so salt not a problem (it's really easy too, just bung garlic, chick peas, tahini, lemon juice and some water to thin in a blender).

If you don't have allergies in you family don't worry about the tahini, sesame seeds are much further down the list than peanuts and the like, and now there is the theory that we should actually be exposing our children to these things rather than avoiding them. One of my friends is Lebanese and there it's a weaning food and she tells me that no one's died from tahini poisoning yet.

My DD has (almost 7 months) just spent half an hour dipping mini rice cakes into a big pot of hoummous and stuffing her face.

There's 0.6g salt in a whole pot of the houmous I've got which is only slightly more than in a slice of bread so not masses
