Gritty Placenta?

Hey!
I’m hoping to gain some answers / see if anyone else has had this experience... I can’t seem to get closure.
My twin boys were born 2 years ago 8 weeks early at 32 weeks down to ‘gritty placentas’... as soon as they were born the midwife asked me if I was a smoker and has smoked throughout pregnancy. I was deeply offended as I never smoked a day in my life.
My twins were rushed to NICU and the first time I met them was 8 hrs or so later in incubators after weeks and weeks in hospital they then came home but it is something I have never had answers on. I am just hoping to understand how my placentas ages so so quickly as a non smoker?

I have searched other threads and this has happened to other people but a couple of days ahead of their due dates so its possible their dates were wrong. But not 8 weeks early or with twins.

Any insight or idea greatly appreciated. It’s something I cannot get closure on and worry about if we were to have another. Did I do something wrong?

Note - both twins had their own placentas.

Thank you xxx

Hi @Twinmum2018Xo,

Sorry you’re struggling with this. Unfortunately nobody can answer this without more information, but it sounds like it would be well worth you asking the maternity unit where you gave birth for a debrief. They can get your notes to see what was written and if any light can be shed on the matter.

@Twinmum2018Xo I believe the midwife is talking about a calcified placenta.
I don't believe you did anything wrong. When you think about it, a pregnancy is just an incredible process, and so many things can not go as planned ( and I tell you this after losing two babies, one at 22 weeks , the other at 16) .

Did you by chance have reflux and maybe sucked on some reflux tablets to help? Were you taking supplements, especially calcium?
