Cous cous, pasta and rice for 7.5 month old?

Is cous cous ok to give a 7.5 month old? I presume so (he has no probs with other wheat based food eg bread) but thought I'd check in case it contains some hidden evil ingredient I don't know about.

Also, at what age did u start feeding DCs proper rice. Bit worried about the texture - he's ok with lumps but usually the lumps in his food are quite soft whereas rice is quite hard. Will try him with a little and see but just checking what others did, as a bit worried about choking.

Finally, pasta - can u get small baby sized pasta or did u just chop up regular pasta for DCs at this age?

you can get small pasta, its ace in soups. Tesco and Asda do it.
my boy loved it.

normal pasta shapes like penne v good for them to pick up in their fingers

Use basmati rice instead of your normal easy cook stuff. It goes a lot softer when cooked and is easily mushable - so perfect for weaning...

can't see a problem with cous cous - mind you it is one of the messiest substances known to mankind

at 7.5 months I dished up normal pasta twirls as finger food, and let him chomp on - which he did really well.

give them fusilli .. they can hold one end and chew

couscous fine

rice can be boiled till soft and is also fine

I have a classic picture of DD at about that age with spaghetti. Really long spaghetti. A bit too long TBH but she got the hang of authentic italian spaghetti slurping really quickly - I just put butter on it so that it doesn't all stick to itself. All other pasta shapes are popular finger food too. For spoon-feeding I just chopped it up a bit in the food processor.

Ooooh Twiglett, get you with your proper pasta terminology

Brilliant thanks.
We do try the finger food thing every now and then but he just doesn't seem to get it! Will keep trying and in the meantime use some small pasta shapes to spoon feed him.

fusilli are best for finger food imo, but dd had diffculties with couscous, she used to sneeze when she ate it but that was probably cos she was self-feeding.

My daughter is almost 8 months and I gave her small pudding rice in her meals from 7 months onward. She did just fine with it and she won't eat lumps in anything. As for pasta, I always use the little pasta stars. The real teeny tiny shaped pasta they make for soups and stuff. Or use regular chopped up spiral shaped pasta for finger foods for baby. Elbow macaroni is also good.
