You always hear the horror stories but the most common reply I see pro early weaning is ‘it never did my baby any harm’, have any of you weaned early and There child actually have anything wrong occur because of it?

The risks of weaning before 17 weeks are things like increased infections, poorer nutrition, and bowel/digestive problems later in life so quite difficult to pin down. It's not like someone gives their 6 week old baby rice and there's an immediate problem (so long as they don't choke!).

Yep, took bad advice DS became intolerant of milk/ lactose, sick all the time.
He grew out of it in the end.

We were all weaned early to make us sleep 🙄

We all have gut and bowel issues and have done since childhood. There's 4 of us. So the assumption would be there's a hereditary element.........however by some miracle none of our DC who were weaned at 6 months or so have any of the issues we had. Make of that what you will 💁🏻‍♀️

My personal view is we should er on the side of caution, particularly because there's no real need to wean early.

When my children were babies I'm sure we were told to wean at 12 weeks and most parents were putting softened rusks or baby rice in the last bottle to make the babies sleep through.

Yes 1970s and before lots of babies would have been weaned before 4 months and lots of adults 40+ now have IBS etc.

dh was weaned at 6 weeks old.
he has ibd.
no one really knows if the two are connected, but it is suspected by his consultant.

Ah thanks for the replies just genuinely curious! Ive always stuck to the guidelines but wondered if any older Mumsnet mums found a direct link to there children’s health problems and early weanin even if it’s later in life
