Hello!

I’m mummy to a gorgeous 14-week old baby boy who is exclusively breastfed. We’ve had a half-hearted go at expressing/bottles etc but there was no great need to do so and all the sterilising and storage was so much faff I thought “why bother”.

When LO is just shy of six months old we are taking a trip to Thailand for two months, our little family of three (DH, LO and myself). I am so keen for him to start experiencing some new tastes and textures and I’m aware that weaning at the six month mark is more about this than getting more calories into him.

I’ve never been anywhere “exciting” like Thailand before and I’m just slightly apprehensive about dipping a toe into this delicate process away from all things familiar even though, by nature, I am an adventurer and so looking forward to this time away. I just wondered whether anyone had started weaning abroad or away from home generally?

Second Q. We come back from Thailand at the end of Dec and I go back to work part-time in Jan/Feb. We are thinking about a childminder or nanny a couple of mornings a week initially. Should I be thinking then about trying to reintroduce a bottle and starting to try to pump, just so that he can have milk given to him by someone other than me during that 4-5 hour period? Or if he’s starting on some purées and seems to take to them, will this and water be enough for a morning?

Thanks so much Flowers

Lots of things going on in your post OP.

If he's starting weaning, are you thinking of doing purées and finger foods or just finger foods? I've done both and letting baby feed itself was by far the easier method. You could start with big chunks of washed fruit.

By January there will be no need to express for one or two mornings a week or to introduce a bottle, unless you want to. Baby can have a feed before you leave and a feed when you are back. When you're away solids and cows milk in a cup will be fine. At that age they can have sone cows milk, it just shouldn't be the main drink so one or two cups a week will be absolutely fine.
