The mess

Seriously, I'm so fed up with the mess my 10 month old makes. It's getting worse. He insists on feeding himself so we've been forced down BLW route meaning that it's almost all finger foods, but running out of ideas now so I've given him things like lasagne and honest to god, he is covered in it. The floor and walls are covered in it. I am covered in it. The bloody dog is covered in it.
He wriggles around and hangs over the side and just makes such a bloody mess. I now try and avoid going out during the day because lunch is just embarrassing, the amount I have to clear up in cafes and stuff afterwards. I see other babies eating neatly off a spoon and I feel like such a failure.

Seriously. Is this normal?

Why don’t you get an inflatable insert for the high chair to keep him in place and try eating in your garden so it’s less stressful for you. BLW is messy bit what you are describing sounds excessive.

He's also started 're-examining' his mouthfuls by taking them back out his mouth with his fingers, thereby making more mess.

If we go out we stick to fairly dry foods like sandwiches or chicken. At home there is usually a mess but it’s easily cleaned up with kitchen roll and spray cleaner. Lock the dog out of the room - it keeps the dog clean and also removes the possibility that the baby is throwing food to “feed” the dog.

Allfour thank you. We did have the insert (we have the IKEA one) but he was making it so grubby that I thought it might be easier to remove it so just the plastic seat to contend with.

We are out in the garden right now.

It's even more annoying because of his eczema we are very limited in how often we can bathe him.
