Help! Ikea Antilop highchair problem

APurpleSquirrel · 26/02/2019 08:55

Hi, we decided to get DS an Ikea Antilop highchair as previously had a Joie Minzy with DD - but DS would slump in it. So decided to get an Antilop - cheap, cheerful, easy to clean etc, also got the cushion to push him forward a bit.
However, DS (8mths) tends to drag the food towards him into his lap & then it falls straight through the leg holes to the floor. With the Joie the seat was longer, so food tended to end up in the seat & could be fished out easier.
I've tried stuffing his lap with clothes but he pulls them out. Any other ideas? Does this happen to everyone else?
We do pick up the dropped food & give it back where possible (floor is clean) but I'm finding it very frustrating.

There's some sort of thing you can buy (think it's called a tiny tot) or if you can get the tray off you could trap his bib or a muslin in the base of the tray to form a sort of food hammock.

Have you got your inflatable insert in? We used to put an extra cushion/ folded towel behind to sit DS further forwards meaning very little gap. Also.. a bib with food catcher?

I sometimes put a tea towel in the gap when my DD drops food-it still makes a mess but stops the food getting on her clothes.

I just let it fall tbh. I don't even give it back to her, just sweep it up and bin it. She'll learn eventually, I'm sure.

I used to always put a cushion behind my son so that his bib was right up against the tray (also used a bib with a catcher bit at the bottom) that way there is no gap

also put a plastic mat down on the floor

I keep seeing adverts for a thing called a bibado, which would solve this problem.

I ended up buying the Joie Mimzy because we had that problem - it was one of the few I could find with a moveable tray that could be positioned closer to the seat. My skinny firstborn took ages to be fat enough for the Antilop! For the second we used an inherited Tripp Trapp but without a tray - we just pushed it under the table. Sorry, I haven’t been much help ;)

I've got bibado bibs and it's literally life changing. Everything goes in the bib- scoop up bib shake over bin, Bung in washing machine. d's is such a messy eater and i couldn't be without it. It's also make specifically for the antilop
