Honey a few days before first birthday?

Hey all, please read the whole thing before jumping down my throat x

I know we cannot give honey before 1, and so far I haven’t considered it. However my daughter has a really bad chesty cough, DH has suggested giving her some honey to help soothe her throath and clear her chest, she turns 1 in a few days, but I’m hesitant. Would you give her some? Or just stick with everything else we are doing until her birthday?
Tia x

I would and did. Ds was about 2 weeks away from turning one. It didn’t harm him.

I workednon the basis that two weeks wouldn’t make much difference.

PotteringAlong · 19/01/2019 16:12

She will be fine.

Smoggle · 19/01/2019 16:13

Really? How on earth would a few days make any difference???

Jackshouse · 19/01/2019 16:13

It will be fine but honey is full of sugar and this tend to make sore throats dry out and makes coughs worse.

ladybug89 · 19/01/2019 16:16

@jackshouse I didn’t know honey was included in that! I’ve always had honey and lemon when I have a cough and it’s helped.

@Smoggle I don’t think it would, but wanted to double check as I don’t really have much experience with babies.

My 7 month old has had the odd bit here and there by accident, I somehow forgot I had put it in the honey and mustard chicken dish until after she had munched her way through a portion of it, her older sibling slipped her a piece of toast with honey on it when I wasn't watching and I absentmindedly gave her the last spoonful of Greek yoghurt, honey and granola I was eating (we eat a lot of honey in this house!)

She's fine, the botulism risk is a risk but an extremely small risk. Your DC is no more or less at risk a few days before her birthday than she is a few days after.

I would!

Jackshouse the NHS is now recommending honey for coughs. Smile

Thank you guys! I’ll give her some and hopefully it helps her x

That’s interesting to know. I have had lots of problems with my voice over the years and then general advice is to avoid honey.

Jackshouse · 19/01/2019 17:40

And spirits but that’s not relevant here Grin

Good luck with that thread on AIBU Jackshouse Grin
