Night time feeds

How can I wean my 4 and a half month old off night time feeds? She only wakes up once at 3.30am (same time every night) has about 2oz then goes back to sleep until 7/8.

I have read that sometimes it's a habit so I tried with a dummy last night but she wouldn't settle until she had milk.

Any suggestions? (First time mom)

It’s very early to be trying to wean off night feeds. She needs roughly 2.5 floz per pound in weight if you are fully ffing. You could try to make sure that she gets as much as she can in the daytime, but baby might still wake Smile

You definitely shouldn’t be trying now. It will likely happen on its own when she’s eating plenty of solids during the day (like real meals, not all the baby rice junk they have at that age). But milk is the main source of nutrients until 1, so definitely not before then. My first dropped her night feeds on her own at 9 months (7 month old currently feeds about 2-4 times still, which is normal). Unfortunately, no night feeds doesn’t mean they don’t wake. Mine still didn’t sleep through til she was 3.5. The good thing about a feed though is it’s usually a quick way to get them back to sleep. It gets a bit trickier when they no longer have milk but still wake because you have to do lots more rocking, walking around, soothing, etc. So I’d make the most of it now and let her drop them when she’s ready.

Why on earth would you want to night wean a 4.5 month old baby? She far too young to be night weaned. If she was 18 months I’d say maybe it was habit but not in a child so young.
She only wakes once? You’re lucky! My 11mo is up about six times a night

Thanks for replies, I think it's because my sisters kids have slept through the night since 12 weeks so I'm a bit jealous!

If your sisters kids have done it, it’s just a fluke. Don’t even spend a moment worrying about it and enjoy those night time snuggles with your LO Smile

I demand fed, they were still feeding in the night multiple times until past a year, by the end I suspect it was comfort not hunger, but I weaned fully by 18 months, with nighttime the last - they had ordinary cows milk in a cup during the day from a year.

Lazypuppy · 14/10/2018 23:51

I weaned my LO off nighttime feed around 5 months, but she started it by sleeping through.

Ince i knew she could do it, i upped milk during the day so she was getting enough feeds, then used a dummy on the frw nights she did wake up.

If she still wouldn't settle i fed her quickly, only took about 2 weeks

You could try a dreamfeed when you go to bed. Mine slept through from the 10.30pm dreamfeed to 7am from 6 weeks old.

Personally I would wait til six months.

We decided we were going to start night weaning at months as this was when I stopped breastdfeeding and went back to work.

However, my baby (bless him0 got there before me and stopped waking at night at eight months.

rubyroot · 18/10/2018 22:30

sorry should say eight months
