BLW finger foods

Starting to give my 5 month old solid food, my other 2 babies were given jars but this time we would like to BLW. So far she's had yogurt and banana and she seems to enjoy those. We will be blending the food we eat (before it's salted) and giving her that but what finger foods are good to start with?

At this time of year soft fruit is good - whole strawberries, raspberries, blackberries. Sliced peaches, nectarines, melon.

Avocado is also easy as whole slices. Or steamed (until soft) carrot batons or broccoli.

Then bread/toast with anything spread on it. Just bread and butter, hummus, cream cheese, peanut butter.

Baby led weaning is giving your baby family foods as they come (with some minor modifications) instead of purées and finger foods.

So anything could be baby led weaning food - spaghetti bolognaise, pasta and sauce, jacket potatoes with beans, shepherds pie, omelette and veg, a roast dinner etc etc. Just don't add salt (and use low salt stock) and don't give honey.

We cut veg like sweet potato, butternut squash, and carrots into chip sized pieces and steamed them. Then ds ate them with his fingers. If you do BLW you don’t have to worry about blending. Our ds ate similar things to us at the same time. We did it slowly as we have allergies in the family and avoided honey, salt and processed food but otherwise it was very simple.

Stick shaped things are easiest for them to pick up and hold. We've been doing BLW for 3 days with DS2 and so far he's had raw cucumber and pepper sticks, cooked carrot and courgette sticks, asparagus, sticks of cheese, omelette cut into strips, halved fried mushrooms, avocado, broccoli, banana, pasta, salmon, strips of blueberry pancake, burger, burger bun, sweet potato fries, chips and sugar-free blueberry muffins. Basically any part of our meal that is low in salt and sugar, and cut into an easy to hold shape where appropriate.
