Almost 9mo hates lumps and meat

I think I'm doing this wrong. My DS still refuses to eat lumps.

Breakfast is porridge or wheatabix with formula

Lunch is either a blended meal (but not completely smooth, more like hummus) or a sandwich

Dinner another blended meal but I up the carbs on this one so more lentils pasta or potato in the mix.

If I give finger food, he eats all veg, wedges, sandwiches, sticks of melon. He'll also happily eat rice cakes, Ella's melty puff things, baby biscotti.

Now if I try to give a normal meal (chicken stew, pasta bolognese etc) it is rejected. Spits out the tiny shreds of meat and dramatically coughs. Cries until I blend it then eats it perfectly well.

I've been doing finger food at each meal and he eats that happily along with puree

Any ideas?

I would slowly reduce the amount of purée and up the finger foods you are offering. How is he with meat if it’s in a sandwich?

If he doesn't like meat does he have to have it? Can't you just feed him a vegetarian diet?

RoboJesus · 22/07/2018 21:11

There's no reason to give him meat if he doesn't like it. Probably only eats it once it's blended because the taste is being masked

My son was like this.... Just relax and let him eat what he wants. There is no rush
My son is now in his late teens and 6 foot tall and eats all around him. It will come

Have you tried giving meat as a finger food? My little one is 10.5 months and will eat strips of chicken, fish and sausages

AlaskanSnow · 23/07/2018 12:31

Meat as a finger food seems to be fine, he's had a chomp of a (homemade) sausage roll, he eats fish fingers and chicken as strips. I gave him a strip of steak to suck on and he tore into it caveman style, chewed for ages, then spat it out!
So I think it's not a taste issue?

I tried giving him just finger foods at a meal but he doesn't eat that much as it goes everywhere and then cries because he is hungry.
If I make the puree really thick I give him the bowl and he eats it with his hands. I've tried mashing with a fork and that seems to work ok too.
It's strange. Maybe I just need to make his food then if say its a stew just pick out the meat and veg and dump on his try to make it into finger food as opposed to spoon food?
