Morning all!
I won’t bore you with the back story but 17wk old has cmpa and reflux. I’ve spoken to his feeding nurse yesterday and she agreed to start him on some baby rice. He loved it! Was pulling the spoon into his mouth for more.
My question is how long do I have him on the rice for before moving onto porridge and/or puréed fruit and veg? The nurse didn’t really say much, I don’t think she wanted to make a commitment.
Obviously I know to check ingredients on everything but to be honest I’m looking forward to being able to give him just fruit and veg 😊 I know to give a few days before introducing a new food to make sure he doesn’t react.
Thanks all!

I’ve just found some dairy/milk free yoghurt for babies on the Sainsbury’s site so that looks exciting too!

Ok I am a bit out of date on this but from what I can remember is introduce one meal at a time so lunch for a couple weeks then breakfast or whatever. And then try new foods individually so you know what they are reacting to if they have a reaction and bring in a new food every couple of days.

Thank you. Nurse said to give him his rice once a day after his mid morning bottle. After a couple of weeks shall I then give him some after his tea time bottle?
Like I said, his nurse was really vague and wouldn’t give me much information.

No expert in this at all, i started at about 4.5 months so take from it what you will.
I started a little baby rice once a day, then gradually made it twice a day, then when I felt ready enough I tried some veg purées and fruit ones. I was careful to try veg first though as they can really get a taste for sweet fruit. Carrot purée is always a good easy start

adviceonthepox · 15/05/2018 10:40

I had exactly the same with 2 of mine they had baby rice once a day for about 4 days and then I went to veg purée. Within 2 weeks they were having that 3 times a day and around 6 months old were eating whatever we had. Spaghetti bolognaise was a big hit, roast dinners, even curry or stir fry's. I only gave fruit purée at about 20 weeks and only a tiny amount for desert after dinner.

Look in a Gina Ford book. There is a whole schedule there

Thank you! Ok so I’ll try veg first then move onto fruit at a later date. Husband was saying that banana, apple etc might be a bit acidy to start with (he suffers bad heartburn) so veg it is!
What would you recommend for breakfast as I was going to give banana?

JUSt got him weighed and asked the HV but she wouldn’t give me any information as she said that health visitors will only suggest weaning from six months.

I’ve noticed a real difference already! He’s having the rice once daily, mid morning, and it’s really helping with his sicky reflux! Hopefully I’m not jinxing is by saying it though! 😂

I would try veg purée next. Just monitor extra closely for allergies if you're weaning early. I read on @thechildrensmedic profile on instagram that the immune and digestive system is not mature enough

Smellybears · 16/05/2018 15:37

Thank you! I will keep him just on baby rice for now then and build up to three times per day then start moving on veg purées

Yknow I’ve read baby rice has no nutritional value so much better to give baby veg and fruit (and after six months some meat fish eggs).

I started weaning at 5 months and a week, and have been doing veg purees. Now moving on to introducing gluten free oatmeal for breakfast. The Weaning Made Easy book is really good.. nice mix of suggestions from blw as well as traditional weaning techniques

KeefBurtain · 22/05/2018 10:58

I weaned early for the same reason (reflux) and it made a huge difference!

I started with puréed fruits/veg so not sure when to move into them but you could mix a bit of purée into the rice?

Smellybears · 25/05/2018 05:55

I see his nurse next week so was going to wait till he was 5 months (the week after) until I started him on puréed veg.
He has porridge in the morning (it’s milk free) and rice at about 4.30pm and he’s loving both! Gobbles then up! Hopefully he will be the same with veg Grin
