Rapid weight gain after introduction of solids - is it normal?!

Heya! I just wanted to get an idea of other people’s experiences with their little ones weight gain while weaning as my little chunk seems to be gaining weight now at an astonishing rate!

He was EBF up until 6 months and I then started trying him on solids. He took a little while to get the hang of it, but now there is no stopping him most of the time!

I have a set of baby scales at home and I weight him once a week on a Monday morning first thing and completely undressed. For the last couple of months he was gaining about 50-80g per week which seemed pretty normal, but in the last two and a half weeks (I weighed him an extra time today out of interest) he has gained an astonishing 800g... in two and a half weeks! The first week with a big jump he gained 330g so I figured it was a growth spurt but it’s carried on going so I don’t know anymore and am now thinking it could be the solids?

I know he is taking in more calories as he hasn’t really slowed with milk feeds (he’s not quite getting on with water so well so hydration could be an element there) but it still seems extreme.

As it stands he’s only having breakfast and lunch and maybe playing with some finger foods for dinner. He has baby porridge and half a fruit pot/pouch for brekky and a homemade veggie purée with some protein and a little carb (pasta/potato) mixed in for lunch with the other half of the fruit pot/pouch. I will always stop if he shows signs he’s had enough... but that rarely happens!

Did anyone else find that their little ones gained weight so quickly when they got onto solids and did it level out when they got moving?

Thanks!!

Forgot to mention he’s 7.5 months now and just over 9kg total 😊

Is he crawling yet? You might find he slows down again once he does. Have you plotted his weight on his weight chart?

He isn’t crawling yet but if I had to guess I would say he’s not too far off 😊 and I’ve not plotted it, but I do keep an eye - he was born on the 7th centile and after about two months he was between the 50th and 75th and has lingered there until recently. He’s now pretty much on the 75th but at this rate... who knows where he will be in a week!!

Some babies adjust after birth and either catch up or go down and stay on a centile so I wouldn’t worry too much about him having gained centiles, especially as you bf. My DD dropped 2 centiles but has stayed there ever since.

I think it will all calm down pretty quickly when he starts to move. Just when I think my DS is looking a bit chubbier, he goes and has a growth spurt.
