My little boy is 5 months and 1 week old and my intention had always been to wait till 6 months as I really wanted to start BLW with him however he has just grabbed a piece of orange from my plate and completely demolished it then tried to go in for more!!! He can sit up on the floor unaided to play with his toys and has been able to do this for around a month now and he is very capable of sticking everything he can reach in his mouth! Is it safe for me just to follow his lead and go for it now or should I wait another couple of weeks?

I think he's demonstrating his readiness to you. I'd go for it.

We weaned at 23 weeks for exactly the same reason. DD demonstrates readiness by grabbing and eating a sandwich. It was so much easier then purees which is how I’d weaned my first.
