Baked beans

Just been reading my Mumsnet book about food etc and there are some recommendations for baked beans and cheese pureed together - sounds yummy! But what about the salt in baked beans? Small amount acceptable? Should I go for reduced salt/sugar varieties? Or avoid until she's older? (6 months now and readily eating plenty!)

I tried the reduced sugar and salt types years ago, and they were horrid, could really taste the sweeteners.

The organic one (whole earth?) is sweetened with apple juice, but I think has all the salt.

Recently I got some Heinz reduced sugar and salt without the sweeteners added - I didn't see what the actual amounts were - it tasted different but not unpleasant, so maybe that's the one to go for.

jetjets - why not just buy a tin of plain beans then instead of having to wash off the juice?

I think there is just too much salt and sugar in these for a 6 mo baby. They happily eat food that we consider to be quite bland until they are taught otherwise. If you teach a baby's palette to only want sugary or salty food, I think you could be storing up trouble.

Franny put a recipe for home made baked beans on Mumsnet somewhere.

I'd just get plain haricot beans in water and then cook them on a very low heat with chopped tomatoes until the tomatoes reduce down to make something resembling baked beans.

oooh, that sounds like a great idea, thanks!!
