Dirty nappies every hour - is this normal?

8mo had been weaning for about 6 weeks. He normally has 1 or 2 big poos a day, usually after a feed or meal. This week he had some aubergine and suddenly developed lots of gas and is farting/pooing a little every hour. This is exhausting enough (mainly because he started crawling and won't stay still for changes) but he also developed nappy rash so trying to plan nappy free time between pooing events is impossible and a disaster for our carpet.

Anyway, it's been a week now - we've sent back to formula only days followed by regular meals he's had before, and not much change. What's going on with his gut? Is this normal during weaning? I can't imagine changing his nappy with this kind of frequency for the next year or two 😪. We've had to abandon cloth nappies because we don't have enough and are speeding through disposables.

It’s not normal, probably just a reaction to something he ate or a bug. I wouldn’t worry about it if it’s onkynbeen a week, but maybe see the Gp if it carries on.

Agree, it could be a reaction although these do tend to slow down or it could be a bug. I think having sone formula only days is a good idea.

Have you tried Metanium for the nappy rash?

What kinds of meals are you feeding him? If still veg only it could be that there is simply too much fibre. Does he have protein and grains too?

BBQueen · 02/04/2018 07:28

I think it’s not out of the ordinary. There are some foods that are known to bung them up/be slower to digest. I think boiled eggs and under ripe bananas (IIRC).

I'm feeding him a mix of things - cereal/yoghurt/toast for breakfast, some veg pasta/potatoes and meat for lunch/dinner.

He's got 2 teeth coming through, but this doesn't seem to be bothering him. Sleep is a bit disrupted as he's rolling into funny positions. He's otherwise well. It was such a sudden change in his nappies, I thought it was the aubergines.

All foods he's had before when he was on 1-2 poos a day.

The nappy rash has almost cleared up - we tried metanium and bepanthen, and as much nappy free time as we dared! Every nappy change is a battle though. 😫

Both my kids had poo like that when they were getting new teeth. I suspect its a teething thing not a weaning thing. It will pass.

My DS also had multiple, horrible dirty nappies when he cut his first two teeth. After that his nappies weren't quite as bad when teething. Possibly a combination of teething and weaning - or a bug - is he off his food/milk at all?
