6 month old won’t take a spoon, any suggestions?

Been trying with purees/slightly textured foods for a few weeks now and although if we manage to get the spoon in her mouth she quite happily eats and swallows it, getting her to open her mouth for the spoon is a challenge! Tried giving her her own spoon etc but nothing works.

She does like feeding herself so has had bits of toast, broccoli, scrambled egg etc but I don’t want to go full BLW, I would like her to eat off a spoon too.

I'd leave it a few days and come back to it as you don't want it to become a battle/ something that upsets them. Not all babies are ready for the eating process bang on 6 months. At this stage they are till getting all they need from milk.

Also, sit them at the table with you when you eat so they see you doing it and just put a few soft finger foods on their tray to play with. Again it doesn't matter at this point if any actually makes it into their mouth or if they just squash it between their fingers.

Well if she doesn’t want to eat of a spoon that’s really your answer! You can’t force her, babies are allowed preferences and you should go with that.

BLW is fun for baby and a lot easier! There’s no faffing, she can eat whatever you’re having as long as you watch the salt and sugar content.

If you’re worried about her food intake milk should still be her main source of calories until she’s 1. Food at this age is to get them used to tastes and textures, and missing the purée stage out isn’t a bad thing, she’s got to start eating proper food at some point, may as well be now!

Try having sticks of toast and veggies to dip into purees and dips and she will eventually copy you and get into it.

It takes a while to get the hang of cutlery but dipping is part of the action

BLW all the way.

My ds was like this and wouldn't have a spoon until he could hold it himself! It's frustrating but I suppose he was just independent from day dot. He still hardly let's me help him do anything 😂

I went full baby led weaning! It’s been about 10 days, she’s happier, I’m happier and she’s eaten a whole massive list of foods by feeding herself. BLW all the way! Works for us anyway. Thanks for the advice :)
