tomatoes.....

can someone tell me why tomatoes need to be de-seeded during weaning??? Is it because of allergies or just cos they can't swallow them? Thanks!

Afraid I am not an expert, however I started weaning at 6 mths and quarters of tomatoes were one of the finger foods that my dd liked (and still does) with no ill effects. She puts them sideways in her mouth and sucks/chomps all the soft stuff and seeds out before dropping the skin on the floor.....

Didn't know I was supposed to avoid the seeds, so she has eaten plenty...I accept that they are prob not digested and go straight out the other end, although never inspected the nappy contents closely enough to find out!

One book says they contain valuable soluble fibre, another says don't eat any green pips.

They're a bit slippery to handle I suppose.

I found raw tomatoes gave both my dcs rashes around their faces. I think they can be quite allergenic but cooked ones have always been fine here.

Tomatoes are a bit harsh on the gut, my sister has just had an op to remove her large intestine and has been told not to eat tomatoes and sweetcorn as it is hard to digest. maybe that has something to do with it?

my dd eats whole tomatoes.It's the only thing we humans cannot digest-ever,so taking them out is a faff,and we don't for adults so why babies!

Redbeki, that's be why you get tomato plants growing alongside railway tracks. Not very appetising ones, mind.

DD (10mths) loves raw tomatoes. Have always cooked them, but she grabbed one off my plate the other day and sucked the pips right out and then discarded the rest. Cant stop her now!

I have become so laid back with my second baby. He's had sweetcorn, tomatoes, eggs etc from around 7 mths. Upshot is at 9 mths he eats absolutely anything, never gags and feeds himself really well. I even gave him a corn on the cob the other day. My first didn't get that until she was 18 mths

so basically, there isn't any real reason that anyone knows. I have de-seeded once or twice when making purees but am reluctant to do again as its so fiddly/messy (I feel like my DD when she's eating!) and I want to make a big batch of pasta sauce! I'll just look out for the pips in the nappy!

Go for it! I use tinned tomatoes all the time. Haven't really examined his nappy, but I'm sure the seeds are in there somewhere!! (along with the sweetcorn kernals)
