Doesn't tolerate 3 meals at 6 months

Hi my little one is 6 and half month. We started food at 5 months. All is well at breakfast and lunch. She does it tea but then she can't sleep and pumps a lot. It takes her couple of days to pass it through in small amounts but it's not hard poop either. Just curious why she is isn't digesting well 3rd meal. She also doesn't sleep through the night I still feed her couple of times at night 8oz of milk. Any ideas? Thank you in advance x

6.5 months seems young for 3 meals, milk should still be the primary source of nutrition. Best advice is solids from 6 months and really it’s just about getting used to texture and trying different foods at this stage.

Take your time and keep up the milk during the day too.

Agree with pp, milk is the main source of nutrients until 12 months, solid foods are additional.

Think about the types of foods you’d eat if you were trying to lose weight? Fruit, vegetables and that’s probably what you’re feeding him. But, the key here is he needs to put weight on - not lose it. Therefore milk remains the main part of his diet.

If he is taking a while to digest it, ease off the solids a bit and slow down.

The NHS guidelines are to start solids from
around 6 months, he’s only 6.5 months so just take your time with him. His gut won’t be used to foods other than milk.

X

I’m sorry for referring to your dd as a he, I’ve had gin and clearly need to not post on mn 😂

Agree with previous posters, 6 months is quite young for 3 meals plus milk. i’m sure some babies can tolerate it but i doubt a lot can.

Thank you guys for your advice. I just thought she would tolerate it more by now as she been eating since 5 months and eats meat also and fish and she eats stage 2 textures now. Milk wise she eats 8 oz 3am, 7am,8am porridge with milk, 12 lunch , 4pm another bottle and 8 pm and sometimes at midnight. As you can see her main food intake is lots of milk and she loves her food but her tummy cant take it I guess. I'll leave 3rd meal off x

I think the current NHS advice is to move to 3 meal s between 8 and 9 months so I think you are doing the right thing in holding it off. Her digestion probably isn’t mature enough yet 🙂

Oh thank you huni. I didn't know that. Kept looking for that info and couldn't find it 😣 thank you thank you thank you. First time mum sometimes feel like I'm doing everything wrong. There is so much advice out there and yet sometimes not enough or not the right one. 😀 I'll hold back cxx

My dd 8 months has porridge for breakfast and half a pouch for lunch, she won't eat dinner. And she's only just started sleeping through 7-7

You're not going wrong at all, there's such little guidance around what to do. I found the Ella's kitchen free resource really helpful, it's like a roadmap and tells you what to do when- it's on website x

Hi OP - weaning is such a minefield, I got myself tied up wondering how to fit meals, naps and milk in at the same stage as you. But other Pp are right - just concentrate on one or maybe two meals at first - we did breakfast, then dinner, then lunch came last when my DS dropped his mid morning bottle.

I also found that in the first couple of months my DS had tummy issues because he was weaning so that is normal. Don't put too much pressure on yourself - I don't think my DS had 3 proper meals a day until he was about 9 months Flowers

Like the others have said, you’re not doing it wrong at all.

If you are reading about baby things on the internet, the NHS info is ok. That’s where it says to “build up to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months”.

The MN Weaning info is good and personally, I try to look for information that is evidence based and avoid sites that have an interest in selling you stuff like cow and gate and bounty 🙂
