just starting weaning - and she's got a rash...

I've started weaning at 5.5 months and she started off with carrot and baby rice which seemed to go ok but then last week we were at a hotel who accidentally threw away the baby food I'd carefully prepared and taken with me so she ended up having to have jars and they didn't even have a batch of the same jars so she had a range of different things.

I figured it would be ok and I had no choice so I was not prepared to be neurotic about it...BUT she now has a rash all round her mouth and on her chest. The jars were:

sweetcorn and quinoa (!)
apple and banana

She also had a bit of bread in a blw stylee.

Are any of these ingredients likely to cause a reaction or is it just one of those things? Any thoughts?

margo, the bread maybe as it probably has gluten in it? I wouldn't introduce gluten until after 6 months.

But I would have expected a reaction quicker than now from something she ate last week? I'm no expert but wouldn't a reaction happen fairly quickly? Please correct me someone if I'm wrong!

Has she been in contact with any other infections - I'm thinking chicken pox or something else spotty?

Maybe a trip to the GP tomorrow if it hasn't gone.

It might be the oil they put in jarred food? I wouldn't worry, just try the foods separately another time and then you'll know what caused it. Probably be gone by the morning. No idea about quinoa (I avoid it as I have no idea how to pronounce it ) but I wouldn't have thought apple, banana or sweetcorn would be particularly allergy causing.

Am guessing it is the bread as they only recommend wheat and gluten after 6 months.

However, saying that ds had a rash after trying most foods when first weaning. But it always disappeared within an hour or two of feeding. I guess their little bodies are getting used to now things??

Oh, and what the hell is quinoa??!!

deaconblue · 09/04/2007 20:58

Ds got a "non specific viral rash" at abiyt that age. Or it might be heat rash???

Littlefish · 09/04/2007 20:58

Quinoa should be fine - no gluten in it as far as I remember.

Littlefish · 09/04/2007 21:00

Coleyboy - quinoa is a bit like couscous but is not wheat based. It's pronounced Keen-wa. Gillian McKeith is always going on about it!

DontlookatmeImshy · 09/04/2007 21:01

Agree that it seems a bit late for the reaction to be due to last weeks food.

Have you introduced anything new this week. What did you give her for her last meal.

Of course it couldbe something totally unrelated to food. Like Clare said -go to docs tomorrow if it's still there

Thanks for all the responses - rash is much better today. I guess I hadn't thought about the gluten - she had it at 6 months minus four days so I thought it would be ok but maybe not. I think the last thing she had before it really emerged was the sweetcorn and quinoa (it was a really lovely but quite poncy hotel - one of the ones advertised on mumsnet in fact - hence quinoa in the baby food). I will go back to the veg for another couple of weeks and then introduce the fruit etc more slowly.

It could just have been one of those things - she also went in a swimming pool for the first time ever so maybe even the chlorine? Anyway, back to carrots for us for now.

Thanks all.

Same thing happened to DS when I started weaning. Thought he was allergic to something I'd fed him, but it was just a coincedence. Rash was due to Johnson's baby bath

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/04/2007 16:57

Chlorine does sound like the most likely culprit, but most jarred food contains milk, so it could also have been caused by dairy if she hasn't had this before.

or have you used a new washing powder?
