Weaning

Find weaning advice from other Mumsnetters on our Weaning forum. Use our child development calendar for more information.

It's not rocket science - "it may cause harm to wean early, it does no harm to leave it till 6m" - WHY do people still want to shovel baby rice in at 12 weeks (or earlier)?

I have come up with some ideas as to why people wean early:

they have competitive baby syndrome and are annoyed someone else's baby rolled first, so they want to get theirs onto steak and chips via baby rice and one fruit or veg a week for months

Well, an idea. Any more?

Backs what up?????

JodieG1 · 08/04/2007 00:09

All I can see if that if a knackered mum weans early she creates more work for herself, making mush ( or buying), feeding mush, more sterlising etc etc.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 00:09

zookeeper, how would that research take place?

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:09
Angry

Aren't their any women who've got poor relationships with their abusive mothers up to harangue, Cam and ZK? Have you stooped to an early weaning thread to be obtuse on instead?

Milk Free Easter Egg anyone?

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:11

nice try hc

CAM · 08/04/2007 00:11

It's all just another stick for mothers to beat other mothers with, very similar to the breast v bottle thing.

Its the level at which people operate that's so tedious.

Some people simply can't stand it if other people don't agree with every word they say.

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:11

could someone please tell me the statistical risk of a child weaned before 6 months developing Chrohns?

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 00:11

watch out, bunny, the zookeeper will get you with her big dumb net.

NoBiggy · 08/04/2007 00:11

Get away.

Rabbits don't lay eggs.

That brown thing aint no egg!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/04/2007 00:12

ROFL!

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:12

i am not one to get involved but ffs ffs ffs!!!

JodieG1 · 08/04/2007 00:13

Cam what rubbish, bottle v breast is nothing like early weaning. Some women that bottle feed don't have a choice, every woman that weans early has the choice to wait.

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 00:13

zookeeper, you know it's not remotely possible to tell you that. why do you keep asking, do you think it proves some point of yours?
or to put it another way... in the absence of such information, but in light of the upsurge in allergies, crohns etc and the WHO guidelines, you'd still take the risk?

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:13

What is odd is that I've either agreed nor disagreeed; simply asked if anyone knew the facts.

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:14

Yes Aitch two whatever. Judge away

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 00:14

zookeeper, seriously, how would that research take place?
it would simply not get funded. it would not be permitted for babies to be weaned early, against WHO guidelines, to see which of them develops a debilitating disease. can you imagine how that could happen?

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:14

has anyone got a gag?

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:14

It's not a stick to beat other mothers with.

Breastfeeding is a physical thing that hurts to do quite often. There are often very good reasons for not bfing - reasons of no support, actual pain, bleeding nipples, emotional issues bound up with former abuse, etc, etc.

But to not wean at 12 weeks? Doesn't take much other than, you know, just not doing it. Does it?!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/04/2007 00:14

Like the stick that you beat Mothers with who have cut their mothers out of their lives? Is it that one?

Can I borrow it? I might find it useful. I fear common sense isnt prevailing so I might have to hammer it home.

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:14

errr I take it that means you don't know then

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:16

ZK, can you have a baby so I can wean it early and see if it gets a horrible disease? Can I, can I?
