Weaning off the middle of the night bottle

HELP!!
My little one is 8 months old and still has a bottle in the middle of the night which is just for comfort! Everyone is telling me including HV that he does not need this and I should stop it or else he will never sleep through the night.
He has 3 bottles during the day along with 3 meals and 2 puddings! More than plently!

I tried last night to go cold turkey and just leave him to fall back to sleep but he was just screaming and I felt so bad just leaving him.

He goes to bed every night wide awake and falls to sleep within half an hour all by himself so I know he can get to sleep by himself but how do I stop this middle of the night bottle?

I put water in the bottle instead. DD decided herself it wasn't worth the effort waking up for Grin

She is 7.5 months however and is still having 4 x 7oz bottles during the day as she gets really twiney if she misses one. I'm not managing to get a huge amount of solid food into her though as she refuses to eat from a spoon and has no teeth yet so is a bit limited on BLW.

Sadly she still wakes up several times a night wanting her dummy back instead but we are hopefully cracking that one too....

How much formula is he having in the day?

I dropped the amount gradually over a few weeks rather than cut it out all at once
