I posted last week about my rude HV who spoke to me like a piece of sh!t when I mentioned BLW and I told her that I suggested she visit your website.

My friend took her baby to see same HV today and she was actually recommending it to her and suggested your website!!! She must have gone off and done her research.

I hope I'll be able to chat with her about it now next time I see her.

how wonderful, you've done the babies in your area a power of good then. hopefully you will extract some sort of grovelling apology when you next meet.

Okay, went to get DS weighed this morning as he has been poorly and wanted to speak to HV about that. She brought up BLW and that she had visited Aitch's website but she still doesn't recommend it as she says you never know how much nutrition baby will get from the food.

I told her that he will get main bulk of nutrients from breastmilk and she said 'well that is fine up to 6 months'. I argued that breastmilk is sustainable and she agreed but is concerned at lack of iron in breastmilk after 6 months and doesn't think that babies would get enough iron from any food when they were 6 months old and it may affect his growth...even used the word 'stunt' if I remember rightly.

I said to her 'so you think BLW will stunt my boy's growth?' and she just smiled at me.

She has kind of challenged me to find evidence to suggest that he will get sufficient iron from finger foods and has even taken down my phone number and email address so she can keep in touch with me about it.

Can anybody help with me with this please? Is there any info that I can pass onto her so she won't challenge any other mums who want to start BLW.

Btw, thought it would be a different HV there today but but she has been off for a while so I am stuck with this one.

  1. Babies' iron stores don't run out at 6mo, they start to deplete. Most babies have enough iron stored to last them to 12mo ish
  1. BM, although lower in iron chemically has iron in a more easily-absorbed form than that found in food or formula.

Fabulous (and well-referenced) page here - will see if I can find any more info.

(NB if you want to avoid her, you could always just stop taking DS to the clinic - if anything's wrong wrong go the GP)

Thank you MrsBadger.

That is just what I needed.

I'm never going again.

Have found another one where my local breastfeeding group is so I will take him there if he needs weighing.

I am going to pass some info onto her though. Don't want her challenging other mums.

given that it's actually, er, her fucking job... shouldn't you be getting to challenge her to prove her case rather than the other way around? stupid bitch, taking your name and address. glad mrsb has sorted you out.
