I havent had ds at clinic for 10 weeks due to illnesses and life in general, so today my HV came to me.

She asked me about weaning and I told her we were doing BLW and she thought it was great. She was so impressed that ds could actually pick foods up and feed himself and thought it was a really positive thing to do.
She then weighed ds and he has dropped from the 25th centile to the 9th.
We had none of that hysteria, just "well thats ok, they're very active at this age, blah blah" and just to get him weighed in a couple of weeks to keep an eye out.

I'm soooo pleased and I really think I have the best HV ever. Shes been a real star since ds arrived.
I just wanted to share that really

wow, she sounds amazing, lucky you. i hope you told her how good she is, she sounds like she deserves a compliment.

GingGangGooley · 27/03/2007 13:55

that is a much better attitude to weighing isn't it.

fab, glad it was a good experience

Nbg · 27/03/2007 13:57

When I go after the easter hols, I'll tell her.
Shes told me in the past that she sometimes dabbles in MN

I just think about all those poor mums that are told that their babies are failing to thrive etc because thye've dropped a centile. Theres just no need.

if she even so much as dabbles in MN, she's BOUND to have heard of BLW

great to hear of a sensible hv...mine on the other hand told me to wean at 4 months because babies that continue only have "bland food like breast milk" turn into the kind of toddlers that'll only eat sandwiches and pasta!!

PinkTulips · 27/03/2007 14:17

that's great nbg... nice that there are good ones out there.

BizzyDint · 27/03/2007 17:47

jetjets- no they don't. i went to mine regularly for the 1st 4 or so months, needed reassurance dd was gaining weight with breast feeding, all fine, if anything they suggested she was over feeding. i stopped going once i felt confident in myself and realised you don't have to go at all. they just kept saying to me 'see you in 2 weeks..' so i kept going. they haven't been in touch at all since, other than for a weaning talk, and that was it. i weigh dd now and again at baby group. i'm expecting a call up for the 8 month check at some point, dd's 10 months old now..

Jetjets, I stay in contact with my HV alot purely because shes so fab. Ds is only 7 months anyway.

My HV was exactly the same, was really impressed when we said that we gave smorgeboard fr lunch, she was 9 months at time to encourage DD to feed herself, told her ther ange of food we gave her and she said that she wished other mums were more brave about different range of food s and eating. She is lovely and helpful on the phone.

soph28 · 28/03/2007 09:00

BTW BizzyDint, they don't do 8mo checks anymore so you probably won't get that call! They have stopped doing all developmental checks after 6wks until they are 5! So you will just have to go yourself if you want a check.

sophiewd · 28/03/2007 09:20

They do in our area

BizzyDint · 28/03/2007 13:46

they do in my area too soph, several of my baby group friends have been seen. apparently it can be any time between 8 and 12 months, but the idea is that it's the 8 month check.

sophiewd · 28/03/2007 13:53

I think DD's was about 9 months or so.

soph28 · 29/03/2007 12:34

oh, maybe it's just in Scotland then. Probably. It's rubbish to be told when your baby is 6wks that they won't be seen again, officially, till pre-school!
