I started give my baby rice nearly two weeks ago, then i started to introduce one vegetable every 3 days. She is 5 and a half months and i know it very early days but she wont seem to open her mouth when i offer it to her. Then when i get it in her mouth she pokes her tongue out and it all drops out onto her chin. Do they all do this, i get frustrated cause a couple of people i know say their baby loves what they give them and open their mouths for more. Is it just me doing something wrong?

sounds like she has not quite lost the tongue thrust reflex ,explained here..

she might simply not be ready for solids yet, and as long as she is having plenty of milk then there is no need to worry as it is recommended to start weaning around 6 months, so i wouldn't worry she is not quite into it...

you are not doing anything wrong, i might think about leaving solids for a week or two and starting again ...especially as you don;t want to end up stressed that she is not eating, and she might end up stressed about eating...

just leave it for a bit!

Sounds like she's not quite ready for it yet - she hasn't lost the 'tongue-thrust reflex' which protects small babies from choking when something other than milk gets into their mouth.
Hold off for a couple of weeks and try again - maybe with some finger food like steamed carrot sticks so she can control putting it in her mouth herself.

I started the rice on a Thursday and introduced veg on the Tuesday the folloing week. I have all these little cubs of fruit and veg in the freezer. So far i she has tried parsnip. carrot, broccali and sweet potato. She didn't like the broccal at all so i am gonna try again with that at a later date. She tries to put her thumb in her mouth as well so i get a soggy vegetable thumb too.

I don't want to give her fruit just yet as i am scared she might love the sweet taste and then refuse vegetables all together

I just read your link. Thanks, the tongue reflex thing is exactly what she does. I think i am gonna try again today as i have already defrosted her carrot and if she still isn't interested i wil leave it a week or so.

How long can you keep the cubes in the freezer?

OP posts:
fluffyanimal · 27/03/2007 11:56

Your cubes should keep for a few weeks. Don't worry.

MrsBadger · 27/03/2007 11:59

few weeks? few months more like. Don't be in a rush to use them up.

lulumama · 27/03/2007 12:00

most fruit and veg puree keeps for 3 months in the freezer...don;t panic!
